My $500 Travel Budget Challenge
I have to admit, I love to travel. It is certainly not easy on a budget. That is one reason why I am striving to increase my cash flow so I can travel even more.
Since 2 of the 4 cornerstones of this website are personal finance and travel, I was wondering how I could challenge myself to write about this. After some thinking, I realized I need to K.I.S.S. the SMART approach to travelling. (Thanks to Patrick for the SMART inspiration.)
$ as in Specific (SMART)
It is as specifically simple as setting a budget. For my personal finance challege, my limit is set at $500.
M as in Measurable (SMART)
It is as measurably simple as tracking my expenses in MS Money. For the purpose of this challenge, I will be tracking the typical expenses relating to travel including,
- Lodging
- Meals including beverages
- Transportation (including air, ground, train, etc…)
A as in Achievable (SMART)
It is simply achievable to meet my challenge when I know I have $500 to work with. If I exceeded $500, then I know I did not achieve the goal of my challenge.
R as in Realistic (SMART)
It is realistically simple if I do my research and plan ahead before my trip. There are many wonderful activities to do that cost far less than one would imagine.
T as in Time (SMART)
Time is a very simple factor here. This will be the biggest deciding factor in managing my budget in order to meet the challenge.
I would love to hear your comments and suggestions in regards to this challenge.

Just so long as you don’t go thinking I created the SMART goal! It’s a business standard that’s been around for a long time!
Be sure to submit your goal to the Carnival of Financial Goals!

Heh, don’t give yourself that much credit, Patrick.
I had heard of it before but never really discovered any specifics about SMART until you provided the link in connection with the carnival.
