Is it the Book or the Writer?
I trying to come up with something to write about so I went over to Writer’s Digest to see if I could come up with some ideas to write about. It is a useful place to go if you are interested in the craft of writing.
One of their features is “writing prompts” which are designed to get you to start writing. One of these prompts posed a good question.
As writers, we all love to read good books for inspiration. What book inspired you as a writer and why?
When I read this question, the first thought that came to mind was whether it was the reading or the writing that inspired me to write.
Was it the book…
See, the first book that really got me hooked into reading was none other than The Shining by Stephen King. I am not quite so sure this master of horror novels inspired me to write as I certainly am not blogging about horror stories.
However, I am not quite sure when my passion for writing really began. I have a sneaking suspicion it began right after reading Jack Kerouac’s book, On The Road.
Or the writer…
As a result, I am not so sure it was a book that inspired me to write, rather than it was the author. Both of these writers have spawned legions of writers and readers in their own way.
What makes Jack Kerouac stand out more than Stephen King was the way his stories revolved around the “real world” as his characters saw it. I was able to identify with his writing style the most.
Although it was not until Stephen King spawned his universe with his novels that I began to see how to tie in everything that I could write about.
That started it all…
However, I never really forced myself to start writing as often as I have in the past as I do now with TheLocoMono Website. The greatest thing about having a blog is you are forced to write new content to encourage your readers to get to know you better and return to your blog to read more.
I admit when I did start writing here on this website that I was writing all over the place. Fast and loose, just trying to churn out as much as I could about this or that. After a while, I started realizing a few key themes popped up here and there and everything else in between was much ado about nothing.
I began to realize I needed to sort my thoughts out on my blog which was how I came up with the sub-domains revolving around the four cornerstones. It was just a matter of freeing up the content here so I could focus on introducing myself without getting too personal.
So tell me, for you, which was it, the book or the writer that got you started on reading or writing?
