Excerpts And The Plan…
A few weeks ago, I posted a poll, Excerpts or Full Post which resulted in a dead heat, 50/50 split between the voters who preferred excerpts over full posts. As a result, I did some digging around on the Internet.
Lorelle, voiced her opinion on excerpts in her post,
I believe excerpts, especially in search results, helps the reader get to the information they need faster, making them happier readers, thus I’m in favor of using excerpts on multi-post pages in all WordPress Themes, not full content views.
After reading her post on this topic, I began to realize the purpose of my website is to provide you with information, and you should be able to access the information as quickly as possible.
The Plan…
One of my goals for my website is to become a better writer. There is a scene in the movie, A River Runs Through It where the eldest son has the task of writing an essay each day. This essay he turns into his father (home-schooled) to be examined for potential. The father would mark out the unnecessary sentences and return the essay informing his son to write it again one more time, “Half the length” each time until he was satisfied.
WordPress displays the first hundred or so words in each excerpts you see on the home page and the archives. If the goal is to provide you with the information you are seeking on my website as quickly as possible, then I will be working on my excerpts, rewriting it over and over until the information provided is satisfactory enough for you to click on the post title to read more.
