Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

This is a great book, one of my favorite.  I admit I am a little biased for a few reasons, primarily because of the fact that I lived in the historic district of Savannah for 2 years.

This is an extremely well-written book by the author who invited himself as a guest in the scene.  By blending in several true stories surrounding prominent members of the social elite of Savannah, Berendt was able to create a graceful flow from one character to the next.

There are little excerpts here and there to inform you of the history of Savannah but most of the story took place in the 80’s.  Even my school, SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) was mentioned near the end of the book.   It amused me to think of what the social elite thought of us “taking over” the historic district.

I would also recommend Hiding My Candy: The Autobiography of the Grand Empress of Savannah, another book co-authored by Berendt as well.  It is an extension of Lady Chablis’s introduction to the world in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.  I have to admit after living in Savannah for two years and meeting Lady Chablis on Halloween night, these two books does not nearly do enough justice to the allure of Savannah, Georgia.
