I like this quote. It certainly keeps you humble when it comes to running a business because you need to account for everything, especially during the Internet age.

What does this quote make me think of?
The nightmare that was our retail business.
Expenses: rental, utilities, wages… Everyday is a race against time to make enough sales to cover expenses and perhaps make a profit.
Rest days? We wouldn’t dare. There is no rest days in retail.

That sounds like an interesting story there about your retail business experience. It is true when it comes to selling products the first goal is to break even. The second goal is the profit. The third goal is the income.
At least that’s what I think.
